Take your family on an outing of a lifetime in Summersville, WV, and enjoy loads of kid-friendly activities. From water activities and Civil War reenactments to finding ghosts and climbing the top of the lighthouse. The small town is packed with exciting activities for the whole family to enjoy together.

1. Enjoy Water Activities at Summersville Lake

The beautiful 2,800-acre Summersville Lake, with its 60 miles of shoreline, is the largest in West Virginia. The lake’s outstanding water quality makes it the perfect place to take the kids swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, whitewater rafting, paddling, boating, and water-skiing. You can rent all sorts of watercraft, from motorboats to paddle boats at the marina.

Take your fishing tackle along and teach the kids to hook large and smallmouth bass, trout, panfish, walleye, and catfish from a boat or the shore. You can also camp at the Mountain Lake Campground in a cabin, tent, or RV with full hookups and amenities.

2. Go on a Historic Outing at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park

The 156-acre park is one of the oldest state parks in the country. Here on the edge of the Gauley River Canyon, the Battle of Carnifex Ferry was fought on September 10, 1861, during the American Civil War. The battle was a Union victory that led to the withdrawal of Confederates from Western Virginia. There are Civil War reenactments, military drills, and living history demonstrations not to be missed.

The park is also part of the Civil War Discovery Trail, which links nearly 300 historical sites through 16 states. While you are in the park, visit the Patterson House Museum, filled with uniforms, weaponry, and other wartime artifacts.

3. Experience the Thrill of a Ghost Hunting Adventure

Take the kids on a lantern-led haunted history walk through town with the author, Sherri Brake, who wrote a dozen books on haunted locations and folklore. Stroll through the old cemetery and learn more about the history and old graveyard superstitions.

Sherri will demonstrate how to use dowsing rods to find unmarked graves, and electromagnetic field detectors will be passed around to assist with your paranormal investigation through the town. The one-mile walking tour begins at the Nicolas County Courthouse and lasts almost 90 minutes.

4. Climb to the Top of the Lighthouse

The 104 feet tall lighthouse in Summersville Lake Retreat is on Mount Nebo, 2,164 feet above sea level. If you have the stamina to climb the 122 steps to the top, you will be treated to spectacular views. The lighthouse looks out over Summersville lake and the beautiful Gauley River National Recreation Area.

The kids will love pitching a tent at one of the secluded primitive tent sites in the forest. If you are not up for roughing it under the stars, there are RV sites and cabins. The campground has loads of activities such as horseshoes, corn hole, ping pong, and rent pontoons, canoes, and kayaks, and there is a playground for the little ones.
