The beautiful landscape around Summersville, WV contains some of the best hiking trails in the state. Hiking is one of the best ways to get outside and stay fit, so grab your boots and head outside for a day out in the fresh air on one of these brilliant trails.

1. Summersville Lake – Long Point Trail

This 3.9 out and back trail is a mild hike through thick hardwood forests that cover Long Point, a promontory formed by a bend in the lake. Bear in mind that this isn’t the trail of the same name at the nearby New River Gorge. The trail takes you through some incredible bird and wildlife-watching habitats, with a diverse collection of species of birds and animals.

The trail is an out-and-back and eventually ends overlooking the beautiful lake itself from a high limestone promontory. The trailhead is just outside the airport entrance and with a convenient parking lot.

2. The Endless Wall

The Endless Wall Trail is a little-known wonder within the New River Gorge National Park. The trail runs in an arc between two trailheads about a mile apart for a 2.4-mile hike that can be increased to 2.7 by hiking along the road for a short distance, to make the trail a loop.

The trail takes winds leisurely through an enchanting forest of eastern hemlocks that is home to some incredible birdlife. We recommend to take binoculars make the most of any bird sightings. Keep an eye out for rock climbers – this park is one of the most popular destinations due to its high limestone cliffs.

3. Tea Creek Loop

This moderate loop takes in Tea Creek Mountain and is located in Monogahela State Forest, approximately an hour’s drive from Summersville. The trail runs for 6.8 miles from a nearby campground and fords the stream several times.

As you hike, be careful on these crossings as the rocks can be slippery and can be swept off when crossing fast water. The trail eventually loops back to the campsite, but not before taking in some stunning views and beautiful forest scenery.

4. Patterson Trail

Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park houses this lightly trafficked loop trail that takes hikers on a gentle stroll through thick woodlands and spectacular wildflowers.

Great views of the Gauley River can be found from the several lookouts along the way, and as it is fairly level along its length, it’s great for hiking in the winter. Make sure to allow enough time to complete the trail before it gets dark, as the gates to the park get locked at sunset every night.

These are just some of the nearby trails that hikers can explore close to Summersville. Need a new vehicle to take you on your next adventure? Head on down to Mid-State Ford today, where our professional team will be able to help you choose one of our brand new and used cars or trucks.
